Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book
Don't know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

Don't know much about geography
Don't know much trigonometry
Don't know much about algebra
Don't know what a slide rule is for

But I do know one and one is two
And if this one could be with you
What a wonderful world this would be

Now, I don't claim to be an A student
But I'm trying to be
For maybe by being an A student, baby
I can win your love for me

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book
Don't know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

La-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta (history)
Hmm-mmm (biology)
Well, la-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta (science book)
Mmm-mmm-mmm (French I took), yeah

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

Sheet Music

The song was mainly composed by songwriting team Lou Adler and Herb Alpert, but Cooke revised the lyrics to mention the subject of education more.

Herman's Hermits version was intended to be a tribute to Sam Cooke upon his untimely death.

Herman's Hermits charted with their recording of the song in 1965, reaching #1 in Canada, #4 in the United States, and #7 in the United Kingdom, respectively. A remake by Art Garfunkel with James Taylor and Paul Simon charted at #17 in 1978. The Sam Cooke version was featured in the 1978 film Animal House and gained greater recognition in the UK upon a 1986 re-release when it peaked at #2 on the UK Singles Chart, going Gold.

There is no known footage of Cooke performing the song, even though, in 1986, ABKCO president Allen Klein offered a $10,000 reward for anyone obtaining such footage.

The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014.
